Saddest of all: Gresford

The tragedy that caused the greatest, most widespread and lasting sadness during the 1930s concerned the terrible disaster at Gresford, near Wrexham, which accounted for the deaths of 266 men and boys following an underground explosion and fire. Mounted within an unequalled-size pair of slate ‘headstocks’, a great pulley wheel forms the centrepiece of the Gresford disaster memorial, unveiled by the Prince of Wales near the site of the colliery in 1982. Below the commemorative plaque is a four-columned list of all the fatalities, in alphabetical order, some family names repeated many times: an extraordinary reminder of the real price of coal in Wales.
